DBT Basics for Friends & Family Group

New Group Offering: DBT Basics for Friends & Family Group

For a loved one of someone struggling with an addiction, the behaviors of the addicted person can be baffling, and can leave a loved one in an all too frequent state of devastation. The responsible human being that they loved has disappeared, leaving a wake of constant worry and sleepless nights.

As David Sheff writes in his memoir, A Beautiful Boy, “Anyone who has lived through it, or those who are now living through it, knows that caring about an addict is as complex and fraught and debilitating as addiction itself.”

If you are a loved one who has been in an ongoing search for the proper help for your loved one, maybe the knowledge of addiction as a family disease, one in which a loved one can play a role in helping, is worthwhile to you. In fact, research has found that family involvement is an important factor in successful change. Maybe understanding a new perspective on why, one based on an understanding of addiction as a brain disease that leads to undesirable behavior, will be valuable. Maybe the connection and support of other people, and the knowledge that you are not alone will provide some relief.

In the DBT Basics for Friends and Family Group our goals are to teach loved ones skills to take care of themselves and to teach skills that can be used to support the loved one in their journey. Incorporating key concepts from Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Substance Use Disorders (DBT-SUDS) and The Family Connections Program, this group will help clients make and sustain the changes needed to support both themselves and their loved one.

There is hope, and it is based on science and rooted in support through collaboration and kindness. This group will meet virtually on Tuesdays from 6-7:30pm, for 10 weeks. In network with United and BCBS PPO + offering out of pocket rates.
